Blogpost 3 : "Subconcious Mind : Hypnosis"

Hypnotize Me!

The complex mind again! From law of attraction to subliminal messages and now the power to control the mind of others? Hypnosis is a very popular thing. When I think of Hypnosis I picture a magical man who probably sold his soul to the devil to be able to hypnotize other people. It hit me in the brain, is this really true?

In today's world some people even pay to get hypnotized. They re-construct their subconscious mind and this serves as a therapy. Actually this is true. So what really is hypnosis? What does it have to do with the way I feel? The way I think? Does it really work?

I came across this article called "What is Hypnosis : Hypnosis Applications, Effects and Myths" which i found in http://psychology.about.com/od/statesofconsciousness/a/hypnosis.htm and was written by Kendra Cherry.

So what really is Hypnosis? While definitions can vary, the American Psychological Association describes hypnosis as a cooperative interaction in which the participant responds to the suggestions of the hypnotist. I read that clearly! It said "cooperative interaction" therefore it means that the one getting hypnotized should have the will to be hypnotized. You can't hypnotize someone without there surrender. As it is stated in the article:

Can You Be Hypnotized?

While many people think that they cannot be hypnotized, research has shown that a large number of people are more hypnotizable than they believe.
  • Fifteen percent of people are very responsive to hypnosis.
  • Children tend to be more susceptible to hypnosis.
  • Approximately ten percent of adults are considered difficult or impossible to hypnotize.
  • People who can become easily absorbed in fantasies are much more responsive to hypnosis.
If you are interested in being hypnotized, it is important to remember to approach the experience with an open mind. Research has suggested that individuals who view hypnosis in a positive light tend to respond better.

People that are open and has good imagination tend to be most likely to be hypnotized. Hypnosis is used as a therapy or treatment which is called Hypnotheraphy. This method treats chronic pain conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, treatment and reduction of pain during childbirth, elimination or reduction of skin conditions including warts and psoriasis, and more.

We see this procedures in movies and it is true but don't believe everything you see. The idea of not remembering what happened after hypnosis is bullshit. In some cases it rarely does happen but not all the time. It said in the article which is supported by studies that the amnesia happens rarely. You can even hypnotize your self and remember everything after that.

In conclusion, Hypnosis is a process which the one hypnotized surrenders his focused attention in the hypnotist. It is like amplifying your subconscious mind to re-construct it's self. You are always in charge and your actions are always your responsibility. The mind really is a fascinating creation. It has so much capability. The quote that my father always tells me "Mind Over Matter" came up to be true.
